Description

We'd love to take you on one of the most magical experiences Boa Vista has to offer: watching the female loggerheads (caretta caretta) come to a remote beach, make their nest and lay their eggs Every year, from July until October, the loggerhead turtles return to Boa Vista to lay their eggs. Boa Vista is the third most important nesting ground in the world for loggerhead turtles. It's something we've been lucky enough to witness for many years, and every season we're just as excited as the first time haha. At the start of the tour we'll pick you up at your hotel and take you to one of the protected nesting beaches. Before we leave, we'll explain a few simple rules, such as wearing dark clothes, staying calm and quiet, and not using flash photography. When we confirm the tour with you, we always send the tour guidelines as well. The rules are in place for one reason only: to make sure the turtles can nest without being disturbed. Once we're on the beach, one guide quietly searches for nesting turtles while the other shares everything you want to know about their story. How a turtle finds her way back to the same island after so many years, how rare their abilities are and what everyone here is doing to help protect them. Ask all the questions you want! When a turtle comes ashore, we don't rush. We wait until the right moment and then quietly walk over together. Standing behind her under red light, you'll watch her dig her nest, lay her eggs, carefully cover them again and slowly disappear back into the ocean. If you're visiting from late August until early November, there's also a chance to visit one of the protected hatcheries, where baby turtles begin their own journey to the sea. Every evening is different. Sometimes nature makes us wait. Sometimes we're lucky within minutes. Nature/The turtles decide. €2 from every guest is donated directly to the local turtle foundation to help protect Boa Vista's loggerhead turtles.
