Description

Your day begins with pick-up from your hotel or apartment in Praia. After meeting your local guide, travel north for about one hour through rural landscapes, small villages, and agricultural fields. Your guide will share stories and insights about life on Santiago Island.

Upon arrival at Serra Malagueta mountains, begin a moderate hike starting at 900–1,000 meters altitude. The trail descends gradually through green slopes, offering views of mountains, valleys, and terraced farmland. The 3 to 4-hour hike covers approximately 6–7 km mostly downhill, passing through family gardens, fruit trees, cultivated fields, and small waterways that reveal local rural life.

After about an hour, the trail reaches the fertile Principal Valley with lush vegetation. The path follows a small stream surrounded by mango and banana trees as well as sugar cane fields.

A highlight is a traditional lunch prepared by a local family using fresh ingredients. You will taste Cape Verdean dishes and enjoy a tasting of Grogue, a traditional sugarcane spirit.

Post-lunch, continue hiking to the Principal Dam, a key infrastructure for valley irrigation and a scenic viewpoint. The return journey follows the east coast of Santiago Island, including a stop at a banana and coconut plantation to learn about local agriculture.

The tour ends with a comfortable return to your accommodation in Praia after 7 to 8 hours of discovery.
