Description

Your journey begins with a convenient mmeting at your accommodation in Chã das Caldeiras. After a short introduction to the volcano, its history, and the unique landscape that surrounds it, the adventure truly begins. The trail starts at 1,700m, leading across the dramatic lava fields left behind by the most recent eruption. Walking here feels like stepping onto another planet, with black volcanic rock underfoot and the vast caldera stretching around you. As the climb continues towards 2,000m, the path becomes steeper, winding through rugged volcanic rocks and soft ash. At around 2,300m, a spectacular viewpoint opens up. From here, the entire crater can be seen in all its majesty, and on clear days the silhouettes of neighboring islands appear on the horizon. The air grows cooler, the landscapes more surreal, and occasional patches of hardy plants remind you of nature’s resilience in this volcanic world. Reaching the summit of Pico Grande (2,826m) is the highlight of the hike. From the top, breathtaking panoramas unfold in every direction: the immense crater, the striking contrasts of black lava and green valleys, and the endless Atlantic Ocean stretching far beyond. It’s a moment of awe and reward that makes every step of the climb worthwhile. The descent is a thrilling finale—racing, sliding, and laughing your way down long slopes of soft volcanic ash until reaching the surrounding villages. After this unforgettable adventure, we will bring you back to your accommodation in Chã das Caldeiras.
